John Catto left his native Scotland for the new colony of Australia to seek his fortune in 1833. He settled near what would become Bendigo, calling his new home Memsie, after the village whence he came. Catto chose his ground carefully and established vines upon a site of rich clay soils, fortuitously scattered with the perfect measure of limestone. Made from the most intensely flavoured grapes, grown to a parcel of fortunate land, Terra Felix have fashioned their Mourverdre to sensational Rhone styling. Not often seen as a pure varietal wine, fruit is sourced from a small vineyard north of Bendigo, planted to a terroir which is highly akin to the soils and clime of la Vallée du Rhône. Match to European cuisine, braises and bay leaf recipes or wine based soups.

Predominantly from the Seppelt property in the Grampians, a third of the fruit is picked off good vineyards at Bendigo, a further component is sourced from splendid Heathcote sites. An assemblage of Shiraz grown to somewhat different terroirs across the finer viticultural precincts of Victoria, the cooler climes of Grampians contributing a richness of fruit to balance the earthy tannins of warmer aspects to the north. An elegant, peppery wine, with expressions of berries, plum and soft tannins, mellowed by oak and resolving on a long, savoury finish.

Originally crafted by the legendary Colin Preece and labelled as Burgundy, Chalambar has become one of the most highly sought Seppelt releases each year, due to its consistency, quality and value. The Connor Park vineyards were planted by industrialist Tom Connor in the 1960s, with a view to establishing a test site for the development of the automatic grape harvester. It was acquired by the Lougoons in the 1980s, a family of pastoralists who learned quickly about the synergy between grazing and winemaking. A small parcel of closely cosseted Durif vines at Lake Marmal near Bendigo, yields a precious harvest of world class Durif grapes. A powerful, opaque wine with sizeable tannin, countered by a palate of remarkable intensity and profound length.

Two thirds Chardonnay and a third of Pinot Gris from good vineyards at Bendigo, Mt Macedon and Yarra Valley. Parcels are all whole bunch pressed into a mix of fermenters and pre loved oak hogsheads for indigenous yeast vinification. An emulation of the suave, effervescent Pinot styles from Asti and the Veneto, redolent of freshly picked orchard fruit over supple hints of seasoned butterscotch oak. Fashioned for indulgence alongside all urbane fare, its bold flavours and dry, savoury finish demands one more sip, and then another, a deliciously, moreish wine.

Parcels of Shiraz for this stunning wine are selected from a unique site at the heart of Heathcote appellation. Premium parcels are collated from Marong and from the estate vineyard at Harcourt. Winemaker Adam P. Marks firm belief is that good fruit should be treated gently and with minimal intervention. All blocks are trellised to vertical shoot positioning system, the growers employ a regimen of traditional viticultural techniques, organics and crop thinning to produce small but precious yields of less than 2½ tonnes per acre.

An opulent, hand crafted cider by a five star winemaking operation, inspired by rustic French techniques. The cider making belief at Bress is that good fruit should be treated gently, with minimal intervention, and so it is with Harcourt Valley Bon Bon. Fruit is selected from an orchard situated in the apple growing centre of Victoria, Harcourt Valley in Bendigo. In bucolic Normandy styling, slightly sweet on the palate, the finished Bon Bon was tiraged to induce a second fermentation in bottle using the same techniques as those used in making Champagne.

Black Jack was a yankee sailor who jumped ship and joined the Castlemaine goldrush of the1850s. He remains a part of local follore. The McKenzie and Pollock families named their property after the adjacent road which commemorates the legend of Mr. Jack, planting vines on the site of an old apple orchard in the 1980s. Redolent of spice and savoury fruits, sweet and juicy on the palate, filled of plums and ripe dark berries over a backbone of fine, sweet and toasty American oak, opulent and lingering, the defining articulation of Bendigo Shiraz.

Major Thomas Mitchell surveyed the area around Bendigo in 1836, excited about his discovery of bountiful pastorals, initiating a migration of squatters and settlers into the august terroirs of Harcourt Valley. Renowned for its arcadian splendour and largess of orchard fruit, Harcourt is wine country, home to some of the most outstanding Victorian vineyards. The carefully selected site near Bendigo has provided excellent conditions throughout four decades, producing impressive reds since the inaugural vintage of 1972. Balgownie is most notable for its deep red colour, vibrant berry fruit aromas, subtle use of oak, velvety textures and fine, lingering tannins.
